Camp & surrounding areas:
Mammals:
Abundant (encountered with more
than 90 percent certainty in preferred habitat):
Both species of Macaques, Proboscis Monkey, Bearded Pig, Malay
and several Palm Civet cats.
Fairly common (encountered with
between 50 percent and 90 percent certainty in preferred habitat):
Orang Utan, several species of Squirrels and Tree shrews,
Otters, some species of Fruit Bats.
Seasonal: Pygmy
Borneo Elephants (August - September; March and a few off-season
arrivals).
Occasional (encountered with
less than 50 percent certainty in preferred habitat):
2 species of Leaf monkeys, Borneo Gibbon, Mouse-deer,
Sambar Deer, Leopard Cat and some other cats (species we are
unsure of).
Rare (encountered less than
twice a year in preferred habitat):
Slow Loris, Tarsier, Sun Bear, Clouded Leopard (twice in 2003,
no known prior sightings).
Birds:
Abundant (encountered with more
than 90 percent certainty in preferred habitat):
Oriental darter, Great Egret, Little Egret, Brahminy Kite,
Crested Serpent-eagle,
Buffy Fish-owl, Storkbilled Kingfisher, Blue-eared Kingfisher,
Black Hornbill, Pied Hornbill, White-rumped Sharma, Malaysian/Borneon
Blue flycatcher.
Fairly common (encountered with
between 50 percent and 90 percent certainty in preferred habitat): White-bellied
Sea-eagle, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Yellow-rumped flowerpecker,
Storms Stork, Plain sunbird, Red and Black Broadbill, Scarlet-rumped
Trogon, several babblers and Taylorbird, Slender-billed Crow.
Occasional (encountered with
less than 50 percent certainty in preferred habitat):
Black-capped Kingfisher, Wrinkled Hornbill, Several Pittas.
Reptiles, amphibians and other creatures:
Both species of Crocodiles, monitor lizards, scorpions, insects,
huge variety of frogs.
